‘Het was een grote eer om gevraagd te worden om op het Left of the Dial-podium te spelen tijdens het festival Outer Town in Bristol’, vertelt Evan van Wax Head. De band sierde Left of the Dial 2024 en keert 7 mei terug naar Rotterdam om in Roodkapje te spelen. De band vertelt wat het spelen op het Rotterdamse festival hen heeft opgeleverd.

Jullie speelden onlangs op een door Left of the Dial (LotD) gecureerd podium op een festival in Bristol. Voelen jullie je ambassadeurs van LotD?

‘We zijn absoluut trotse ambassadeurs voor LotD en het was een eer om gevraagd te worden om op hun podium te spelen op Outer Town in Bristol – ook een ​​fantastisch festival trouwens. We zijn blij deel uit te maken van zo’n geweldige community.’

Jullie hebben vorig jaar op LotD gespeeld. Hoe was dat?

Evan: ‘LotD was een van de beste ervaringen die we als band ooit hebben gehad. We hadden ons aangemeld voor het festival, werden geselecteerd en speelden vier shows in Rotterdam, verdeeld over drie dagen. Driekwart daarvan was voor LotD. In Peron, V11 – in een tot de nok toe volle boot – en V2; de ene show was nog chaotischer dan de ander.’ Archie: ‘We zijn ook allemaal dol op Rotterdam in oktober. Het doet ons erg denken aan Manchester. Het is allemaal heel goed te belopen en iedereen is ongelooflijk gastvrij en vriendelijk. De organisatoren van LotD waren geweldig en we zijn zo enorm goed ontvangen door het festival. De hele ervaring was echt fantastisch. Vooral het rondlopen door een compleet nieuwe stad en bands tegen te komen die we van thuis kennen. Het voelde vanaf dag één als een tweede thuis en we kunnen niet wachten om terug te gaan.’

Wat heeft het spelen op LotD voor jullie opgeleverd?

Archie: ‘LotD gaf ons het meest wilde publiek waar we tot nu toe voor hebben gespeeld. En we hebben op hele coole plekken kunnen spelen. Wat we er van geleerd hebben is dat we van elk optreden een echte show willen maken. Nog sneller, nog harder en zo.’

Jullie zijn een relatief nieuwe band. Hoe zijn jullie bij elkaar gekomen?

Harry: ‘De band zoals die nu is, is pas echt ontstaan ​​in 2023. Maar we begonnen eind 2021 toen ik naar Manchester verhuisde om er te gaan studeren. Ik had een paar demo’s opgenomen tijdens de lockdown en ik ben op zoek gegaan naar iemand die wilde drummen. Ik werd aan Lewis voorgesteld via een gemeenschappelijke vriend, Oscar. Samen vormden we toen een heel primitief en vreselijk slecht klinkend garage-duo. Daar was de lol al snel vanaf. We hebben daarom Archie erbij gevraagd om wat gekkigheid met synthesizers toe te voegen. Want we wilden eigenlijk helemaal niet enkel een gitaarband zijn. We hebben in die periode een paar bassisten gehad. Dat waren allemaal vrienden van ons. , die allemaal goede vrienden waren, maar met Evan hebben we de ware gevonden.’

Tot nu toe hebben jullie wat singles uitgegeven. Wat zijn de plannen?

Harry: ‘Het album komt er aan!’

Als ik naar jullie muziek luister schreeuwt het Oh Sees. Of zijn er andere invloeden?

Lewis: ‘Wij houden van een goede mix van punk, noise rock, krautrock, maar ook psych- en garage. Oh Sees was zeker een inspiratiebron in de beginjaren van onze band. Maar dat geldt voor veel garagepunkbands. Inspiratie putten wij ook uit Black Flag, Minutemen, Big Black en andere bands met dezelfde hectische energie in hun muziek.’

Jullie nummers lijken in twee categorieën in te delen: korte energieke nummers bedoeld om live de zaal op z’n kop te zetten, en vriendelijker liedjes met meer traditionele songstructuren. In welke richting ontwikkelen jullie je?

Harry: ‘Klopt. Onze songwriting splitst zich in twee richtingen. Je hebt het echt pakkende werk, waarbij we schaamteloos neigen naar garagepop; er zijn zelfs meezingbare nummers. En je hebt de vreemde, hoekige, minutenlange noiserocknummers die we ertussen gooien om mensen in verwarring te brengen en te houden over wat er komen gaat.’

En dan heb je ook nog liedjes met krankzinnige wendingen. Hoe verzin je die, bijvoorbeeld in Back Hand?

Harry: ‘Ja, want daarmee voorkomen we dat een nummer van begin tot eind bestaat uit rechttoe rechtaan gitaarmuziek. Het geeft ons ook de kans om live stukken te jammen, als we het eenmaal beu zijn om zo’n nummer elke avond weer op dezelfde manier te spelen.’

Jullie komen uit Manchester. Waar moet je in die stad zijn voor goede live muziek?

Archie: ‘We raden graag Big Hands aan. Het is onze favoriete plek in Manchester. Er spelen voortdurend geweldige bands uit Europa, de VS of Australië. En het dakterras is een ideale plek om een pint of een arancini te drinken, zeker nu het weer aangenamer wordt. Er werken aardige mensen bij Big Hands; maar zij zijn ons waarschijnlijk inmiddels wel een beetje zat, aangezien de tijd die we daar doorbrengen.’

‘Ik zou willen dat er een mooi verhaal aan vast zat. Maar we vonden het gewoon goed klinken’.

Wax Head likes to keep people confused about what’s coming next

‘It was a great honour to be asked to play on the Left of the Dial stage during the Outer Town festival in Bristol’, says Evan from Wax Head. The band graced Left of the Dial 2024 and will return to Rotterdam on May 7 to play in Roodkapje. The band talks about what playing the Rotterdam festival has brought them.

You played at the Left of the Dial-stage last weekend in Bristol. Are you proud advocates of this Rotterdam festival?

We are absolutely proud advocates of Left Of The Dial and it was an honour to be asked to play their stage at Outer Town in Bristol – another amazing festival. It’s great to feel part of such a great community.

What were your experiences in Rotterdam last October, both of the city and the festival?

(EC) Left of the Dial was one of the best experiences we have had as a band, we applied and played four shows in Rotterdam over three days. 3/4 of them being for LOTD. Peron, V11 – a packed out boat and V2 hall; each show more chaotic than the last.

(AJ) We all absolutely loved Rotterdam in October. It reminded us a lot of Manchester, very walkable and everyone is incredibly welcoming and friendly. The LOTD organisers were amazing, and we were treated so well by the festival. The whole experience had a really amazing feeling to it, particularly just walking around a completely new city and bumping into bands that we know from back home. It felt like a home away from home from day one, and we can’t wait to return.

What did playing LOTD bring you as a band?

LOTD gave us some of the rowdiest crowds we’ve played for so far – in some of the coolest venues too. It really pushed us to put on more of a show. Faster louder etc etc.

You started in 2023 and are a relatively new band. How did you meet and start Wax Head? And can you maybe also introduce everyone in the band while answering this question?

(HB) The band as it is now really came together in 2023 but we started out in late 2021 when I moved to Manchester for university. I had a couple demos I had recorded during lockdown and I went looking for someone to play drums with me. I was introduced to Lewis through a mutual friend Oscar and we put together a really primitive shitty sounding two-piece garage thing. This idea got old really quick and we enlisted Archie to add some weirdness with synthesisers, we didn’t want to be strictly a guitar band. We’ve moved through a few bass players, all of which have been good friends, but with Evan now the perpetual soup is served.

You released only a few singles as yet. What are the plans for the future?

The album is coming!

Listening to yur music, it shouts out Ohsees (or any of the variations). Are they an inspiration? Or what other bands are influential?

We like a big mix; punk, noise rock, krautrock along with the usual psych and garage sounds.

Oh Sees definitely inspired a lot in the early days of our band which I’m sure is the case for many garage punk kind of bands. Equally though, the inspiration comes from Black Flag, Minutemen, Big Black and others that carry that same frenetic energy.

I get the impression Wax Head is both in it for the short sharp and loud noise kind of music but I also hear some stuff that sound like more traditional pop song structures.

(HB) Our songwriting splits down two paths. There’s the really hooky stuff where we are shamelessly leaning into garage pop / even sing-alongy type of stuff. Then there’s the weird angular minute-long cuts of noise rock we throw in there to try keep people confused about what’s coming next.

Your songs also has some weird twists. How do you come up with something like the twist in Back Hand?

It breaks up the song from being straight ahead guitar music the whole way through. It also gives us something to extend out live for a jam section if we get tired of playing that song the same way every night.

What venues should Dutch people visiting Manchester check out?

(AJ) We’d absolutely recommend Big Hands for sure. It’s unanimously our favourite venue in Manchester, there’s consistently great bands playing there who have come through from Europe, the US or Australia and the roof terrace is the perfect place for a pint or some arancini, especially now the weather is getting a bit nicer. The staff at Big Hands are lovely people, but probably sick of us by now with the amount of time we spend there

Wax Head. Please explain!

We wish there was a story for it but we just thought it sounded good.
