Ze komen uit Praag, de hoofdstad van Tsjechië, heten I Love You Honey Bunny (?), lanceren vrijdag 28 maart een nieuwe plaat waar in stijl werkelijk geen peil op is te trekken en werkten samen met de Nederlandse muzikant Koen van der Wardt (Klangstof) én Steven Ansell (Blood Red Shoes). Dat wekt nieuwsgierigheid. Daarom stellen we zanger-gitarist Martin Šolc een paar vragen.

Hoe hebben jullie elkaar ontmoet?
„We zijn bijna 10 jaar geleden begonnen toen we nog op de middelbare school in Praag zaten. Het is gek om te bedenken dat het al zo lang geleden is. Wat ons het meest verbond, was gewoon de wens om muziek te maken en te spelen. Ik denk niet dat we ooit hadden gedacht dat we uiteindelijk over de hele wereld zouden opnemen, interviews als deze zouden geven of op tournee zouden gaan in Nederland. In de kern zijn we gewoon een groep vrienden die oprecht houden van wat we doen.”
Hoe ziet de scene eruit in Tsjechië? Is het makkelijk om internationaal aan de bak te komen?
„De Tsjechische muziekscene groeit. Er is veel geweldig talent, maar internationaal doorbreken is een uitdaging. Je moet opvallen, consistent zijn en, het allerbelangrijkste, zoveel mogelijk buiten Tsjechië spelen. Daarom richten wij ons op optreden in het buitenland.”
Mijn eerste indruk van jullie nieuwe album Don’t Look When I’m Changing wordt bepaald door de eerste track Let’s Do It Again. Ik vind de groovy Roosevelt-achtige vibe leuk om te horen. Maar waarom openen jullie het album met deze track?
„Bedankt! Let’s Do It Again voelde als de perfecte opener omdat het de toon zet voor het hele album. Opnieuw beginnen kan soms lastig zijn, maar we gaan er toch voor, ook al weten we dat de weg vooruit moeilijk zal zijn. Tegelijkertijd dachten we dat het leuk zou zijn om de boel te beginnen met een echt liefdesliedje.”
Naast dat eerste nummer staan er ook energieke indierocknummers zoals Kintsugi op de plaat. Dat roept de vraag op: mag de echte I Love You Honey Bunny opstaan?
„We zijn opgegroeid met het luisteren naar verschillende genres, en we wilden onszelf niet inperken bij het schrijven van dit album. De combinatie van alle invloeden is wat ons maakt wie we zijn.”
Steven Ansell (Blood Red Shoes) about I Love You Honey Bunny:
„Dit is het tweede album waar ik voor de band aan heb gewerkt en het is echt leuk om te zien hoe ze steeds onbevreesder worden met wat ze maken. We leven in een tijdperk waarin niemand om genregrenzen geeft en deze jongens zijn echt avontuurlijk en staan open voor het proberen van dingen. Ik weet nooit echt of ze met een hiphopbeat, een dancenummer, een indierock anthem of een lo-fi jazzy vibe naar me toe komen. Ze hebben zichzelf toestemming gegeven om alles te proberen, wat echt een genot is om mee te werken, omdat we helemaal los kunnen gaan en ervoor zorgen dat we, welke kant het ook opgaat, helemaal gaan en ons niet inhouden.”
Je hebt samengewerkt met Koen van der Wardt. Wat was zijn bijdrage aan de nieuwe plaat?
„Koen is ongelooflijk goed in wat hij doet. Voor ons draait het uiteindelijk allemaal om vertrouwen. De producers waarmee we werken, worden voor een tijdje onderdeel van onze band. We werden vrienden nadat we samenwerkten aan ons vorige album We Just Had a Wonderful Time. En Klangstof is ook een van onze favoriete bands, dus we waarderen het enorm dat hij het leuk vindt om met ons te werken.”
Het geluid van je band is behoorlijk elektronisch. Wat is je favoriete apparaat dat een I Love You Honey Bunny-stempel op jullie sound drukt?
„Haha, goede vraag! Wil je dat we helemaal in de nerdmodus gaan? Voor mij persoonlijk is dat de Meris Enzo, die mijn gitaar laat klinken als een synth, en misschien ook mijn Boss SL-20 Slicer. Eigenlijk alle spullen die ervoor zorgen dat mijn gitaar niet klinkt als een echte gitaar.”
Je moet dit waarschijnlijk elke keer uitleggen wie heeft die bandnaam bedacht?
„We wilden altijd een boutique kaarsenmerk beginnen voor romantische gelegenheden samen. Toen we besloten een band te beginnen, is de naam die we daarvoor hadden verzonnen blijven hangen.”

I Love You Honey Bunny evolves from candle brand to band
They come from Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, are called I Love You Honey Bunny (?), launch a new record on Friday 28 March that is truly unmatched in style and collaborated with Dutch musician Koen van der Wardt (Klangstof) among others. That arouses curiosity. That is why we ask singer-guitarist Martin Šolc a few questions.
How did you meet and start this band?
„We started almost 10 years ago while we were still in high school in Prague. It’s crazy to think it’s been this long already. What connected us the most was simply the desire to play and create music. I don’t think we ever imagined that we’d end up recording all over the world, giving interviews like this, or heading out on tour in the Netherlands. At the core, we’re just a group of friends who genuinely love what we do.”
What is the scene like in Czechia? What does it take for a band from Prague to start working internationally?
„The Czech music scene is growing. There’s a lot of great talent, but breaking through internationally is a challenge. You need to stand out, be consistent, and most importantly, play outside of Czechia as much as possible. That’s why we’ve focused on playing abroad.”
First impression of your new album is defined by the first track Let’s Do It Again. I love the groovy relaxed Roosevelt kind of vibe. Why did you choose this song to open the album?
„Thanks! Let’s Do It Again felt like the perfect opener because it sets the mood for the whole album. Starting over can sometimes be tough, but we still go for it, even though we know the road ahead will be difficult. At the same time, we thought it would be nice to kick things off with a proper love song.”
Opposite to the first track, you also present high energy indie-rock tracks like Kintsugi. This raises the question: will the real I Love You Honey Bunny please show itself?
„We grew up listening to different genres, and we didn’t want to restrain ourselves writing this album. The combination of all of the influences is what makes us us.”
Steven Ansell (Blood Red Shoes) about I Love You Honey Bunny:
“This is the second album i’ve worked on for the band and it’s been really enjoyable to see them grow more and more fearless with what they make. We live in an era where nobody cares about genre boundaries and these guys are really adventurous and open to trying things. I never really know if they’re gonna come to me with a hip hop beat, or a dance tune, or an indie rock anthem, or a lo-fi jazzy vibe. They’ve kinda given themselves permission to try anything which is a real joy to work with because we get to go wild and just make sure that whatever direction it goes, we go all the way and don’t hold back.”
You worked with Koen van der Wardt. What was his contribution to your new record?
„Koen is incredible in what he does. For us, it’s all about complete trust. The producers we work with become part of the band for a limited time. We became friends after working together on our previous album We Just Had a Wonderful Time. Klangstof is also one of our favorite bands, so we really appreciate that he enjoys working with us.”
The sound of your band is quite electronic. What is your favorite piece of equipment that puts a I Love You Honey Bunny-stamp on your sound?
„Haha, great question! Do you want us to go full nerd mode? For me personally, it’s the Meris Enzo, which makes my guitar sound like a synth, and maybe also my Boss SL-20 Slicer. Pretty much all the stuff that makes my guitar sound not like an actual guitar.”
You probably have to explain this every time, who thought of the name of the band?
„We always wanted to start a boutique candle brand for romantic occasions together, then we decided to start a band instead but the name stuck.”
